The Dignified Man’s Survival Kit

Helping Men Survive the 3rd Week of August

Found by The Dignified Devil

Every week here at The Dignified Devil, we spend a lot of time thinking about how we can help the modern man survive the modern world. This week of course is no different. Today we explore the apps, the tools, the gadgets and the books that will enlighten the modern man as he navigates his way through his week. These are the things that are worth a man’s time, money, attention and space in his Junk Drawer.

The Book
The Hungover Cookbook
By Milton Crawford

Ernest Hemingway, legendary Dignified Devil that he was, once opined “an intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools.” Indeed. For the mornings after, we recommend The Hungover Cookbook, a collection of recipes wrapped in witticisms to help you through the suffering and speed your recovery. Cheers.

The Film
The Royal Tenebaums: Criterion Collection Blu-ray
Directed by Wes Anderson

“Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums exists on a knife edge between comedy and sadness.” So begins the great Roger Ebert’s fond review of a classic film. Wes Anderson has made his mark with his unique ability to lay bare the beautiful absurdity of modern, dysfunctional family life. Arguably the most complete execution of his vision, The Royal Tenenbaums is hilarious, hauntingly desperate, but always authentic. Bonus: it’s also a rare opportunity to watch Ben Stiller and completely enjoy the experience. Now available with the meticulous quality of a Criterion Collection transfer on Blu-ray…very dignified.

The Tool
Card Sharp 2

Why does a man need a knife? We turn to the impossibly cool + certifiably dignified David Mamet: “Huddie Ledbetter, also known as Leadbelly, said: You take a knife, you use it to cut the bread, so you’ll have strength to work; you use it to shave, so you’ll look nice for your lover; on discovering her with another, you use it to cut out her lying heart.” Perhaps the modern man has a more refined sense of conduct, but the knife is still an essential tool. We recommend this one, just don’t try to carry it on a plane.

The Vice
AIR: Alcohol Inspired Refresher
By Air

Air is a Water + Alcohol. Carbonated. All Natural. An alternative to the beer guzzling, whiskey-sipping, and tequila-shooting techniques of alcohol-consumption, Air is a clear malt beverage of citrus, berry, or club flavors. A low-calorie alcoholic beverage with only 4% alcohol by volume, a drink for people who aren’t looking to get hammered and don’t particularly enjoy the bitter bite of stronger adult beverages. A more responsible form of consumption for a hipper generation.
